A large and enthusiastic audience enjoyed a delightful evening of musical entertainment from the Symposia String Quartet, joined by a second Viola, on Saturday 5th April. The concert, organised by Geoff Brett and John Lavery, was another in the series held at Studham Parish Church. The programme included two quintets from Mozart and a quartet from Dvorak, with an encore based on Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Tonight’ from West Side Story, arranged by the cellist, Gina van Hoorn Alkema.

After costs have been accounted for, proceeds  from the evening will be donated to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity

Whipsnade Zoo 10k Run and FunRun

The Whipsnade Zoo Stampede (a 10K race and FunRun organised by Dunstable Road Runners) took place on Sunday 1st June. The perfect running conditions allowed many runners to achieve personal bests. Runners had travelled from as far afield as Oxford, Startford-upon-Avon, Derby and even France, while local running groups from Stopsley, St Albans, Watford, Dunstable and Ampthill & Flitwick were particularly well represented. The main 10k race was started by actress Jaye Griffiths (Bugs, The Bill, Silent Witness, Drop the Dead Donkey, etc. etc) and Jaye also presented the prizes afterwards.

The event is always a major occasion in the local calendar and, thanks to all the hard work by Des Salmon and his team of loyal supporters, and the generosity of visitors, the impressive sum of £6,000 was raised for St Mary’s Church Fabric Repair Fund.
