Whipsnade Village Festival 2009
New Feature at Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo recently opened the gates to Cheetah Rock – its  flagship exhibit for the world’s fastest land mammal. Open from Good Friday, visitors can now view the cheetahs on their landscaped rock look out, and are able to watch them from just metres away in an African style hut, where floor-to-ceiling glass will be the only thing separating them from the animals. Close up views of these magnificent cats, like those shown here, are guaranteed.

Sealion pup gets to shine at zoo on his first birthday

Dom, the cute, lively youngster – who turned one this month - has got round mum Salt and dad Berkley, and will now be joining in when the sealions demonstrate their behaviour and natural skills in the Splashzone. Dom is already able to demonstrate how keepers give him a health check by lifting his front flipper on his little stand on the pool’s edge. He’s also desperate to have fun and can be seen messing around with the hose and jumping up out of the pool attempting to splash the audience. But don’t expect him to behave, he is a toddler after all!

Dom is named after BBC Radio One breakfast show newsreader Dominic Byrne, whose favourite animal at the zoo is the pup’s dad, Berkley.

End of Year Scrub Clearance

December 2008

A small team of dedicated volunteers got to grips with the invading scrub on Whipsnade Green on a bright but chilly Sunday in December.  Thankfully much hard work and the essential bonfire helped to keep both the scrub and the cold at bay.  Pictured left to right are: Kate Sheard (NT Warden), Charles Frost, Richard Gutteridge and Pam Ward.

May Craft Fair

The bank holiday weekend in late May provided beautiful weather (for a change!) and visitors to the Craft Fair held at the Old Hunters Lodge, Whipsnade, were able to bask in glorious sunshine. The event was organised by, and staged in support of, the British Heart Foundation. Stalls ranged from delicate jewellery and finely crafted wooden ornaments to cartoons and needlecraft. On this rare occasion, those stall-holders who ended up inside the pub must have regretted missing a wonderful opportunity to hone up their sun tans!

Dell Farm Fun Day, 2009

The Dell Farm Fun Day, held on Sunday 7th June, managed to pack lots of fun and games into a busy afternoon, despite the weather oscillating between warm and sunny one minute, and heavy showers the next! Hundreds of visitors from all over South Beds and beyond came to enjoy the delights on offer, and a very enjoyable time was had by all.

Zoo 10K & Fun Run

Whipsnade Zoo played host to another “Zoo Stampede” 10K road race on Sunday 7th June, an annual event superbly organised by Dunstable Road Runners.  The serious event, which attracted many hundreds of entries from across the south of England, was followed by a 2K fun run for youngsters and adults alike.  A water station for all runners keen to ensure that their tough and thirsty work did not result in dangerous dehydration, was was staffed by local Scouts, under the guidance of Paul Rushmer and his leadership team. The photographs below give a flavour of the day, with official results and more piccies to follow shortly.

July 2009 marked a major occasion in the life of Whipsnade, with a wide range of events and activities that all contributed to the Village Festival. The first week kicked off with the Scarecrow competition, and various amusing examples were displayed around the village - many picking up on themes linked to house or cottage names. The Flower Festival got underway in St Mary Magdalene Church on Saturday morning, 18th July, with the Annual Fete following in the afternoon in the church grounds, and a delightful concert from Marion and Chris Rowlatt, also in the church, in the evening. Meanwhile, an historical exhibition was displayed in the Village Hall throughout Saturday. On Sunday 19th July, children’s activities and a village luncheon were held at Dell Farm, and Festal Evensong marked the formal conclusion on the Sunday evening, led by Rector Nicola Lenthall with guest preacher Right Rev’d Graeme Knowles, Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral. For those unable to attend over the last weekend, there is still a chance to see visit the Flower Festival up until Friday 24th July 2009.
