Whipsnade News
Scrub Clearance on the Common

Whipsnade Common and The Green provide a lovely open, natural space for walkers to enjoy, and car drivers to admire, as they pass through the village. However, with little or no grazing of livestock these days, brambles and other expansive vegetation tend inexorably to encroach upon those open spaces. So it is down to a loyal band of local volunteers, whose healthy toil helps to keep some of the scrub at bay. If you would like to lend a hand on occasions, to enjoy the fresh air and meet new people, then get in touch with Ken France (872375) or just turn up  on the day (from 11:00am) with stout boots, gardening gloves and your own picnic! Our next session is likely to be the first Sunday in the month, but please contact Ken in advance to check.

Tree Cathedral Volunteers brave the Cold and Rain

Full marks to the hardy souls who braved the elements and helped at the Volunteers’ Day in March to plant new trees.

New Feature at Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo recently opened the gates to Cheetah Rock – its  flagship exhibit for the world’s fastest land mammal. Open from Good Friday, visitors can now view the cheetahs on their landscaped rock look out, and are able to watch them from just metres away in an African style hut, where floor-to-ceiling glass will be the only thing separating them from the animals. Close up views of these magnificent cats, like those shown here, are guaranteed.

Sealion pup gets to shine at zoo on his first birthday

Dom, the cute, lively youngster – who turned one this month - has got round mum Salt and dad Berkley, and will now be joining in when the sealions demonstrate their behaviour and natural skills in the Splashzone. Dom is already able to demonstrate how keepers give him a health check by lifting his front flipper on his little stand on the pool’s edge. He’s also desperate to have fun and can be seen messing around with the hose and jumping up out of the pool attempting to splash the audience. But don’t expect him to behave, he is a toddler after all!

Dom is named after BBC Radio One breakfast show newsreader Dominic Byrne, whose favourite animal at the zoo is the pup’s dad, Berkley.

Dell Farm Fun Day, 2008
